You’ll Never Walk Alone
2009
Performance and multiple-channel video installation
Format: DVCam
Length: Variable

A performance and subsequent film in which the artist sings the well known pop song and football anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ to members of the public on the streets.

Provoked by the song’s anthemic power to unite people, the artist attempts to convey its sentiment through singing to willing listeners on the street. As the camera intently watches their reactions, some choosing to join in the singing, the film tries to pin point the moments at which solidarity and belonging may be felt between strangers.

The work was commissioned by Battersea Arts Centre for BURST international and national live art and performance festival 2009. The film was subsequently shown as a three-monitor piece at Battersea Arts Centre.
